Here, There and Everywhere
Dérives: a walk without destination to examine how perception and personal sensations, desires and individual worries are affected by the urban environment geography and, at the same time, how these elements affect and shape it.
The fundamental technique of Psycogeography is called Urban Drift: it consists into a free but critical path onto urban ground.
This is how Guy Debord described this technique into his “Théorie de la dérive” in 1956:
“A technique of transient passage through varied ambiences. Dérives involve playful-constructive behavior and awareness of psychogeographical effects, and are thus quite different from the classic notions of journey or stroll. In a dérive one or more persons during a certain period drop their relations, their work and leisure activities, and all their other usual motives for movement and action, and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the encounters they find there.”
With this approach, a stroll through the historic center of Lecce, a Baroque pearl of the Mediterranean, gives rise to the Beatles-esque "Here, There, and Everywhere."
The walk alternates between closed passages and open spaces. The human figure is always present, albeit at different scales and speeds: fleeting in enclosed spaces, immobile when the path opens up, almost as if to mark a moment of pause.
Una passeggiata senza meta per esaminare come le percezioni e le sensazioni soggettive, i desideri e le preoccupazioni individuali siano influenzati dalla geografia dell’ambiente urbano e, allo stesso tempo, come questi elementi influenzano e ne diano la forma.
La tecnica principale della Psicogeografia consiste dunque nella Deriva Urbana: un percorso libero, ma critico, sul terreno urbano.
Guy Debord nel suo “Théorie de la dérive” del 1956 la descrive così:
“La deriva si presenta come una tecnica del passaggio veloce attraverso svariati ambienti. Il concetto di deriva è indissolubilmente legato al riconoscere effetti di natura psicogeografica ed all’affermazione di un comportamento ludico-costruttivo, ciò che da tutti i punti di vista lo oppone alle nozioni classiche di viaggio e di passeggiata. Una o più persone che si lasciano andare alla deriva rinunciano, per una durata di tempo più o meno lunga, alle ragioni di spostarsi e di agire che sono loro generalmente abituali, concernenti le relazioni, i lavori e gli svaghi che sono loro propri, per lasciarsi andare alle sollecitazioni del terreno e degli incontri che vi corrispondono.”
Con questo approccio, una passeggiata nel centro storico di Lecce, perla barocca del mediterraneo, nasce “Here, There and Everywhere” di beatlesiana memoria.
La passeggiata alterna passaggi chiusi a spazi aperti. La figura umana è sempre presente anche se a diverse scale e velocità: fugacemente negli spazi chiusi, immobile quando il percorso si apre, quasi a voler segnare un momento di pausa.
